WILLIAM OLIVE was born in Ireland in 1822, and four years later came to Australia with his parents in the ship " Marquis of Anglesea," his father coming out under engagement to the Australian Agricultural Company at Port Stephens as overseer of the brickmakers. His father remained with the company for about four years, and then went to Maitland and started brickmaking on his own account. When sixteen years of age our subject left home, and after travelling through Cassilis, Liverpool Plains, and the New England country, he arrived on the Clarence in 1841. He was then employed on the Glennugie Station, and afterward moved from place to place on the Clarence, and visited the Richmond. In 1854 he was married to Miss Jane Hann, and permanently settled on the Clarence. In 1881 he came to Laurence, and purchased the hotel in which he still carries on business. He has seven sons and eight daughters. Mr. Olive is at present chairman of the Progress Committee of the township of Laurence
