Details: ARCHIBALD HAY, Furnishing Arcade, Hunter Street, was born in Stirlingshire, Scotland, where he learned his trade of cabinetmaker and joiner, and came to the colony in 1855. He followed his trade in Sydney till 1857, when he settled in Newcastle, and commenced his business in Watt Street, but in seven or eight years after purchased land and built warehouses thereon, which form part of his present premises. Mr. Hay manufactures cabinet work of every description, executes all kinds of upholstery work, and supplies carpeting and all household furnishing. His establishment is the oldest in the line in Newcastle, and he gives employment to 25 hands, his business connection extending through the whole of the Great Northern district. He is an extensive Government contractor for the supply of furniture and fittings. In 1884 his business had so increased that he had to erect new premises. He extended his frontage, sank extensive cellars, and added another story to his building, thus giving accommodation for adding a musical department to his business, and enabling him to supply pianos, organs, all cusses of musical instruments and music. Mr. Hay is a member and trustee of the Newcastle Lodge of G.U.O.O.F., trustee of the Presbyterian Church and grounds, and is married with a family of three sons and five daughters. Two of his eldest sons assist him in his large business, Mr. J. W. Hay having special charge of the musical department
