Ship: Joseph Cunard 1841
Date: 18 December 1841

Details: On the 16th September when the Joseph Cunard, emigrant ship was near the equator a girl 6 years of age fell overboard, and was a far way astern before the vessel going at the rate of 9 miles an hour could be turned; however the seamen immediately lowered a boat and pulled hard, and being directed by Captain Birnie to steer right in the ships wake for they could not see the girl, they succeeded in picking her up, while about to sink with her head under water. When the boat cam along side the captain handed the girl on board to Dr. Thom, in a cold and apparently lifeless state, who having ordered a warm bath to be in readiness used every effort to restore her, and we are glad to say that his exertions were successful. This reflects the highest credit on Dr. Thorn/Thom who is universally esteemed by the passengers as a talented surgeon and kind superintendent
