Details: The Criterion was sold in 1950……. The freehold of the Criterion Hotel, Newcastle, has been sold to a country hotel keeper for £62,000. This information was given by Mr. J. F. De Meyrick, of Casula, as representative of the John Broughton Estate, which owned the hotel. Mr. De Meyrick would not disclose the name of tile purchaser. The Criterion Hotel, at the corner of Hunter and Bolton Streets, diagonally opposite Newcastle Post office, is a substantial five-storied building. It was built by the late James Toohey about 60 years ago, before Tooheys Brewery was formed into a company, on land leased from Mr. John Broughton Messrs. James Toohey and John Broughton were close friends, and when Mr. Toohey realised the value of the land as a hotel site, Mr. Broughton readily made it available on a building lease. Mr. Broughton a ship s chandler, had his office to the room occupied by the Criterion bottle department in 1850. The office and hotel were the rendezvous of captains of sailing ships that visited Newcastle. After the building had passed into the hands of the Broughton Estate, Tooheys Ltd. held the lease till 1944, when tenders were called, and licensee, Mr. G. J. Pyke, was the successful tenderer.

Details: In 1888 the Newcastle Morning Herald - ANYONE having visited the Crystal Palace Hotel, at the corner of Hunter and Newcomon streets, a few months ago, and yesterday, would find an astonishing change upon the occasion of his second visit. The place has undergone such a marvellous renovation that it is hard indeed to recognise the old bar in the elaborate and tasteful now bars which have taken its place. The public bar is now a large and lofty room, with an extremely fine circular bar, which would do credit to any hotel in the colony; and the bar fittings, which are of highly-polished wood, would bear comparison with any others in the city. A private bar, with an entrance from Hunter street, has been provided, and from its handsome appearance and cosiness, is likely to be come a resort for gentlemen wishing to enjoy the excellent beverages provided by Mr. Lindsay. At the rear of this bar is a well-furnished parlour, and three other parlours are also provided. The work of renovation has been extremely hard, and the manner in which it has been carried out is very creditable to Mr. J. Henderson, architect, who has ably superintended the work done by Mr. T. Boyle, contractor. The improvements consist of various alterations, such as the removal of the original beams and wood posts which carried the Hunter and Newcomen streets frontages, rendered necessary through the ravages of white ants and other defects. The upper part of the premise s had to be supported, and the foundations and some of the walls were rebuilt, as well as other work beneath the supported parts. The bar fittings are splendid pieces of workmanship, and show the excellent quality of the work turned out by Mr. Archibald Hay, of Hunter-street

Details: The new Esplanade Hotel is a four storied building, and occupies the site of the Moongi Flats. It will be opened on Friday. The main portions of the existing foundations and the walls were utilised in the re-planning; and the site was extended by 18ft. The ground floor consists of a large public bar and saloon bar, in addition to a saloon lounge 25ft. by 3ft., bottle department, entrance vestibule, general office and manager s office and strong-room. Both bars have tiled counter-fronts and steps, plate-glass shelving, with ornamental mirror backgrounds, lit up by flush strip lights. - Floors are of inlaid-linoleum, glued to a bituminous felt underlayer. The public bar walls are tiled, while those to the saloon bar are artistically panelled in Australian walnut. The walls of the vestibule, saloon lounge, and offices are also panelled in walnut. Two telephone booths are provided in the vestibule, similarly lined and sound-proofed. The first floor consists of a lounge lobby, lounge-room (30ft. x 40ft.), dining room (50ft. x 25ft.) and private dining room, with large airy kitchen and subsidiary offices. The lounge-room has a waxed and polished floor, and a bar is provided in one corner for guests. The second and third floors contain 50 bedrooms, with ample provision for ventilation and light. Liberal bathroom and lavatory accommodation is provided, and the fittings are all modern and hygienic. The bedrooms have papered walls, and are furnished comfortably, including small writing tables and mirrored wardrobes. Each bedroom has a bed light, telephone and basin. with hot and cold water service. Excellent views are obtained from the bedrooms; and the carpeted passage ways ensure quiet surroundings A modern automatic lift service has been installed, and particular attention has been paid to the complete isolation of all noises while the lift is in operation. The ceilings are lined with insulite wall boarding, and in the main rooms some very decorative results have been obtained. A special room houses the section boiler, storage cylinder and fuel bins, and an extensive hot water system has been provided. The building, designed and supervised by Messrs. Jeater.
