Lady Jane Franklin alighted from the 'Tamar' steamer at the stone stairs on the side of the quay and walked to the Commercial Hotel up the street on the right. It had a pointed chapel front. The house was shut up and upon knocking on the door a chambermaid appeared in a ragged shift & single flannel petticoat, no shoes, stockings nor nightcap. The house was worse inside - 2 parlors, one with fireplace which burnt wood and Newcastle coal of which the whole place smelled
