              Details: Laying the Memorial Stone of the Newcastle School of Arts. - The laying of the stone was performed by the president W. Keene Esq., F.R.G.S. in the presence of a large and respectable gathering. The building was erected on land having a frontage of 60 feet to Hunter street and 128 to Wolfe street. The great hall which was in the course being built in 1870 stood back from both streets leaving frontages for future buildings. It was built of brick on stone foundations and was eighty feet long by forty wide and thirty high. At the rear end which was semi circular a stage was planned three feet above the level of the hall with a large gallery at the other end. The hall was to seat about 800 people comfortably. The architect was Benjamin Backhouse of Sydney and the contractor Mr. John Ash of Newcastle
