Details:
In order to meet the requirements of the increasing population of Mayfield East, in the Newcastle district; a large and commodious school church has just been completed in Margaret Street by the enterprising members of the Mayfield Methodist Church. This extension of church work will meet the spiritual wants of the district for many years to come, and it is hoped that a strong and increasing fellowship will be built in the locality.. Special attention has been given to the accommodation for the children, and the building has been specially designed for Sunday school work, and at the same time may be used for church services and the social functions appertaining to work of this kind. The structure is somewhat of a departure from the usual style of church architecture. The building comprises a hall,. 62ft x 30ft, and four class-rooms with a porch 14ft x 8ft. The main hall, which is capable of seating from 350 to 400 people, is divided into two for school purposes by a movable partition, the smaller portion, 22ft x 30ft, to be used for the kindergarten, and the larger 40ft x 30ft for the general school. The four class-rooms being reserved for the senior boys and girls. The partition is a double panelled partition, so as to render it as sound-proof as possible. The building is a timber-framed structure on concrete piers, with the outside walls of mahogany rusticated weather- ;boards up to sill lever and Sprigg s asbestos from sill to the eaves. The inside has a 5ft dado, the remainder of the walls and ceilings being lined with asbestos panelled out and painted. The front elevation is of imposing and pleasing appearance, with stained shingle gables and walls of asbestolite and weatherboards, the class-rooms giving width, while the porch in the centre breaks up the continuity. The work has been faithfully performed by Messrs. Carpenter and Darkenne, contractors of Islington, at a cost of £900, to the designs and under the supervision of Mr. T. J. Pepper architect, of Watt Street, Newcastle

OPENING OF THE MINMI PUBLIC SCHOOL This event took place on Saturday. Previous to. the procession, Mr. Hartwell, Government Inspector, accompanied by the contractors, Messrs. James and Humphrey, went over the building, and after minutely inspecting the structure, pronounced it well and faithfully built. Now it is completed, the building is an ornament to Minmi in its elevated position, and reflects credit upon the constructors. A procession of the different societies was formed at about 11 o clock in front of Host Morgan s, and, headed by the Minmi Brass Band, marched round the town, back to the point of starting, where the school children, about 300 strong, fell in, and thence to the school grounds. The procession filed into the grounds in the following order:-The school children, Ancient Order of Masons, the Orange Order, Manchester Unity, Grand United Orders, with their two splendid banners, all wearing their scarfs and emblems, and last, though not least, the Ancient Order of Druids. The people having taken their seats in the school house, at the table were seated A. Brown, Esq., of the firm of J. and A. Brown; Thomas Hungerford, Esq., the member for the County; J. H.Hubbard, Esq., from Newcastle; Mr. Thos. Howieson, Chairman of the Local Board, and Messrs. Croft (Secretary), Wilson, Brown, Fryar, Dyatt, and Thomas.
