Details: On the brow of the hill towards the western boundary there is a plain flat stone, upon which the following has been deeply cut - Here lieth the remains of Elizabeth Bolton who departed this life March 10 1876 aged 76. The name recalls several interesting and historical events. The lady to whose memory the stone was placed in the churchyard was the wife of Major Bolton the first collector of Customs at Newcastle. Mr. Bolton was one of the first to take an interest in volunteer matters and held a commission first as Captain and then Major of the Newcastle Volunteer Rifles which corps was established in 1860. Major Bolton was one of the first aldermen elected at the incorporation of the town in 1859. He died a few years ago and was interred in Sandgate Cemetery, leaving a daughter, the wife of Archdeacon Bode
