James Burns, a journeyman tailor and Edward Yates a labourer charged, one with stealing the other with receiving a piece of cloth, the property of John Rhodes. John Rhodes was a master tailor living in Hunter-street and James Burns was in his employ as a journeyman. Witness Sarah Goodchild, a married woman stated that she knew both prisoners, Yates when in Newcastle lodged with her. Yates was admonished by the Bench and discharged. Burns, who was so emaciated through drink that he was obliged to be accommodated with a chair pleaded guilty to the charge and was ordered to be imprisoned in Maitland gaol for three months with hard labour
