He found the city considerably improved in its streets in particular; the extent of wharfage was much greater and harbour generally improved. His correspondence centred around his disappointment in the method of the plan of bringing in the coal on the Great Northern Railway on a low level, and then raising and shipping it by means of steam cranes

Parliament - Mr. Henry Taylor Plews said he was a civil engineer and studied in England under Mr. Stephenson. His experience was very extensive during his time and after a time he left and went to Mr. T.E. Foster, where he remained for three years and a half; afterwards he came out to NSW to survey and examine the A.A. Co. mines and a railway in the Hunter district. He enumerated several other works he had been engaged upon, one of the last of which was the Tramway Company. He had gone down to New Caledonia for the French Government; from thence to England ; and in both places he was engaged in railway matters. He was now in the employment of government as Engineer of Roads and surveyed the tramway land about twelve months ago. He had not gone over the entire line, but had the working plans of the twenty nine miles that had been prepared checked............
