Surname: McDicken
First Name: Hugh
Ship: -
Date: 9 February 1869
Place: Newcastle
Source: Newcastle Chronicle
Details: The next business brought forward at the meeting had reference to the case now pending between the proprietor of the Chronicle and Mr. Scott, P.M. The chairman, in drawing attention to the subject, said Mr. McDicken deserved the sympathy of every miner in the district, for the Chronicle had always been known as the Miners Advocate. Much sympathy was expressed by the meeting, and a proposal to get up a subscription for the defence fund met with general approbation. The people here believe that the Chronicle is in the right, and I have no doubt you will be liberally supported. There is some talk here of getting up a petition to the Government to have Mr. Scott removed. It is the wish of every man in this part of the district that the Chronicle may win the day. The speech that the editor made at Wallsend was a good one, and deserved the reception it met with.
