Death of James Gingell. A very old residence of Newcastle having spent about 42 years of his life there. Born 7 August 1812 in parish of Bermondsey, London. Came to Sydney on the Napoleon the Third on 14 June 1856. Shortly afterwards arrived in Newcastle as engineer for the patent fuel works which were at Honeysuckle Point. The works close and he took a position under Mr. North, a miller who carried on business where Irelands bond store later stood. After leaving Mr. North he went into business in Hunter street opposite the Rouse Hotel, subsequently removing to Perkins Street where he remained for 13 years and only left on account of the ground being required to build the Victoria Theatre. Member of the first fire brigade in Newcastle of which Henry Webb was superintendent. First to publicly advocate in 1879 the erection of public baths for the city. Initiated into Freemasonry on 25 November 1864 becoming a member of the Marine Lodge which met at the old Rouse Hotel in Hunter Street.
