Details: Jane Waters was indicted for stealing two cheques and money belonging to David Choute (Choate) at Muswellbrook on 19th August. The prosecutor and prisoner formerly lived together as man and wife and she was entrusted with all his money which she received and disbursed for the house. ON the day the charge was laid both of them had been drinking and the prosecutor was very drunk and in excitement against the prisoner for something she refused him, he preferred the charge of robbery. On coming to himself the next day he related a totally different story. Jane Waters was acquitted of the charge

Details: Sentenced to death with recommendation for mercy for stealing, on 21st November 1819, at Edmonton, one mare valued at 15 pounds, the property of William Cobbett. David Choat admitted his guilt at taking the horse as he wished to visit his ailing father. His evidence at the trial - 'I am Guilty, I took the mare on Sunday night from Cobbett's stable, rode away to Suffolk, about sixty miles, and stopped at Buckeridge for refreshment, and said, I was going to Cambridge, stopped about five miles from Cambridge, and said I was going to a clergyman with the mare. I rode across the country, and proceeded to Rattan, put up at the Red Lion, and told them it was my master's, Richard Gibson . I then went to my father's, stopped there, and said nothing about the mare. I was going to bring it home, and was afraid I should be apprehended with it. I was apprehended in coming home.'.
