Details: The man Bourke either fell off or was thrown from his horse one night and fell against one of the post of the railing and was killed. The accident happened about 100 yards from the east end of the bridge and the post was nicked at the time and the mark remained there for years. He resided at Lochinvar, and was a kind of sub overseer and was rather harsh to those under him. He was buried on his farm, Burkes Land, near High Street Maitland and his son on attaining his majority in 1848 or 1849 caused the property to be subdivided and sold. Mr. R.W. Goodall was the surveyor and the principal street was named after the owner, Bourke Street, Maitland

Details: Petition for a grant of land - That Your Excellency s Petitioner arrived in this colony per ship Archduke Charles in the year 1813 under sentence of transportation for seven years, which sentence Petitioner having faithfully fulfilled obtained a Certificate on 19 October 1819 to that effect. That Your Excellency s Petitioner has a wife and seven children to support which he rents a farm in the district of Appin at the rate of 100 pounds per annum and is possessed of 2 horses and 8 head of horned cattle.
