Rev. George Woolnough succeeded Rev. Clarke in charge of the circuit in 1857, and, like his predecessor, found the work difficult. At more than one meeting there were present Rev. Woolnough, J. Daniel (circuit steward) and William Lewis (local preacher), only enough to carry a resolution. In the next year a decided improvement took place and the old chapel was taxed to capacity. An event of interest in 1857 was the replacement of tallow candles, with which the chapel had been lighted, with the newly introduced sperm candles. As always with Methodists, the music was a feature of the services, an orchestra comprising Mr. McNaughton (violin), Mr. Langley (bass fiddle), John Lovell and A. Ross (clarinets) accompanying the singing. On special days many people gathered outside, unable to gain admission to the chapel
