Extracts from Pen and Ink Sketches of Methodist Men of Mark by Rev. M. Maddern - Mr. Chapman was the son of a Wesleyan minister and was born in Yorkshire in 1819. He was converted in 1830, and began to preach shortly after. He was accepted as a candidate for the ministry in 1843, and was sent to the Theological Institution at Richmond for training. In 1845 in response to a call, he offered for Foreign Mission work, and received an appointment to Gambia, on the West Coast of Africa. After labouring in that deadly climate for a couple of years he was invalided and returned to England. In 1847 he came to Australia, his first appointment being to the Parramatta Circuit. He laboured subsequently in Bathurst, Chippendal, Newtown, West Maitland, Goulburn and York Street, and in three of these circuits he spent two triennial terms of service. In 1872 he was appointed General Secretary of Missions and for nine years prior to his death he gave to the service of this office rare business ability and the valuable experience of his early training on the Missions Feld…… In some features of the face and general physique, between Benjamin Chapman and Alexander Maclaren, there was the same towering height and sparseness or boniness of frame, and flash of the eye in both men….. While visiting Hawkesbury district on Foreign Missionary deputation work in 1881, he was taken seriously ill and died a few days later at Windsor
