Details: Samuel Hare, in government service, charged with having a watch in his possession supposed to be stolen. Chief Constable George Muir, states - Robert Douglas came last night to me and reported that whilst drinking at a house in town with a party a watch he had in his possession had been taken clandestinely form him. I went to the houses of the party he had been with and made a strict search without any avail. I then went to the house where the party had been drinking. I there learnt that on the watch being missed the owner of it who it appears is James Quin made a great disturbance about it accusing two or three in consequence of which the party had separated. There was a bed in the room and a man was lying on it. I caused him to be searched and on his person the watch was found. Hare is the man. He was in a state of intoxication but not so bad but that he must have been aware of the disturbance which had taken place about the watch. The prisoner states in his defence Quin and I are good friends and whenever I see him likely to get tipsey I generally get his watch and any money had has into my possession to prevent his being robbed. Seeing that he was getting drunk last night I took his watch from him. I afterwards lay down. I did not know that there had been any search made for it until I was called off the bed by the constable. Mr. Muir states Hare was more drunk than Quin. Samuel Hare sentenced to 25 lashes
