Details: The late Captain Herbert Robert Cross came to Newcastle over 60 years ago. Shortly after his arrival he was appointed colliery shipping manager for the Newcastle-Wallsend Coal Company - a position which he retained for about half a century, when he retired and went to Sydney. He resided there for a number of years. As far back as the year 1862, with the late Captain David T. Allan, he formed the Newcastle Naval Brigade, Captain Allan being appointed commander with Captain Cross as lieutenant, the latter succeeding to the command on the death of his chief. Captain Cross took a keen interest in the bigade, until he resigned the position in 1888, and on his retirement received the long service medal.Previous to coming to Australia, the deceased was connected with the mercantile marine, and it had been his boast that during the many voyages he had made across the Irish Channel with passenger vessels he never had a mishap of any kind. During the Crimean War he was engaged in transporting troops

Details: To the Editor of the Maitland Mercury. SIR - Having seen this day a paragraph in your paper of the 17th instant, from a correspondent at Muswell Brook, setting forth that Chief Constable Fox was the person who found out the actual perpetrator of the Jerrys Plains mail robbery, I beg to inform you that statement is incorrect; and as every horse ought to carry his own saddle, so let every man have the praise due to him. On the morning of the 13th inst., I, Sergeant Giles, accompanied by Corporal Worsley and two troopers, apprehended Robert Crunden, a deserter from the 11th Regt., and lodged him in Muswell Brook lockup. I was told that a woman named Howell had just exchanged a twenty-pound note for Crunden, when I had a suspicion that it was he who had robbed the mail; Corporal Worsley then went and demanded the money from Mrs. Howell, which she refused to give up until afterwards ordered by the magistrates. Chief Constable Fox then went with her to Mrs. Nowland, from whom she got the change; the change was given again to Mrs. Nowland, and the twenty-pound note handed over to Mr. Fox, which was all he had to do with it. The one-pound note was obtained by Corporal Worsley from Mrs. Hegarty. - I remain, sir, your most obedient servant, EDWARD GILES, Sergeant Mounted Police. Jerrys Plains, Jan. 19, 1849.

Details: The Denman mail had just arrived and , the mailman was waiting to carry it, and the Jerrys Plains portion, on to Singleton, when a resident arrived and asked the postmaster to transmit a £20 note and a single note to a business man in Sydney. The postmaster agreed, but was careful to take the numbers of the notes, and hand the sender a duplicate of them. This done, the mailman began his 18 mile drive, but had not gone far when he was bailed up at the point of a rifle, and ordered to hand over the mail-bags. After taking all the valuables, the bushranger galloped off in the direction of Jerrys Plains, whilst the poor mail man sat disconsolately in his gig. An hour later the postmaster was disturbed by the heavy footsteps of a man, who asked if he could be favored with the change of a couple of notes. On tendering the flimsies, the postmaster quickly observed the numbers corresponded with the notes despatched by the Singleton mail, so, without hesitation, he rushed the bushranger, and, with the assistance of his brother and a neighbour, seized the highwayman, and after a desperate struggle trussed him up in a manner that made escape impossible. During this process the mail man arrived to report his loss, and then assisted in the capture. The robber, who gave the name of Robert Crunden, alias Gentleman Bob, was sentenced to 12 years on the roads.
