Details: ROBERT CLOUGH, Steam Cooperage, was born in Middlesex, England, in 1842, and removed to Victoria in 1866. He spent a year in travelling through the colonies and settled in Sydney in 1868, where he entered the service of the Colonial Sugar Refining Company, and held a responsible position with them for eight years, erecting vats, etc., at the Clarence River Distillery. He then settled in Newcastle, his first work being the fitting up of the Castlemaine Brewery. In 1880 he took a trip to England, and brought out the most modern machinery for carrying on his trade. He built all the vats used in the Sydney Soap and Candle Company s Works, when established in Tighes Hill, and is the chief manufacturer of wine vats and casks in the northern districts. He finds employment for several hands. He visited England in 1884 for the purpose of purchasing further plant and material. Mr. Clough is a member of the Masonic Lodge Sedgwick, the I.O.O.F., and the Church of England. He is married, is the father of one daughter, and took an active part in establishing the Wickham School of Arts
