Whilst so engaged he learned the trades of tinsmith and locksmith, and became so adroit in removing fires from the miners eyes, that he proved a blessing to many , and was frequently complimented by the medical profession on his skill. In 1872 he purchased an allotment of land, and built his present hotel, which he has carried on ever since. He continues his trade as a tinsmith, and is a large shareholder in the Co-operative stores, the local branch of which is under the management of his son, while the Lambton stores are superintended by his son-in -law, Mr. Crighton. On the incorporation of the municipality Mr. Cherry was elected an alderman at the head of the poll, and was carried shoulder high by the ratepayers. He is one of the most popular and best respected men in Hamilton. He has been a strong advocate for a thorough system of drainage, and has continually agitated for improvement in that department. He is a member and treasurer of the G.U.O.O.F ., which lodge meets at his hotel, and is the father of three sons and six daughters.
