Details: SEDGEFIELD HOTEL, Robert E. Burns proprietor, is situated about five miles from Singleton. Mr. Burns was born in 1835 in Hartleypool, England, and arrived in this colony in 1851. He settled in Sydney, New South Wales, for two years, at the end of which time he removed to Brisbane Water and followed the occupation of a sawyer for two and a half years. He spent a further three months in Sydney, but in 1857 proceeded to Singleton and at once settled in Sedgefield. Here he worked as a sawyer, and in 1867 opened a wine shop and kept the local post-office. By industry and perseverance Mr. Burns made for himself a competence. He owns 117 acres of splendid land besides his hotel. The latter contains twelve rooms, with extensive stabling, and forty acres of paddock accommodation provided for the convenience of patrons. Mr. Burns was in 1876 made the local postmaster, which position he still retains. He is a member of the M.U.O.O.F., is the father of eleven sons and three daughters, and is widely known and respected
