Returned Morpeth; wrote for press; shareholder and one of 4 managers Northern Times and Maitland Advertiser 1856-58, leaving after Dr H.G. Douglass sued him for libel. Noted by leading liberals, was appointed clerk of Petty Sessions at Stony Creek 30 Nov. 1858, magistrate 1859; when el. to LA salary for some time paid by constituents; to Bar 26 Oct. 1861; practised in Syd.; QC 1879. Successful land speculator. In 1880s dir City Bank of Syd., Col Mutual Life Assurance Soc. Ltd, Mercantile Building, Land and Investment Co. Ltd, and of Civil Service Co-op. and Civil Service Permanent building socs. KCMG 1887. Trustee National Park; member Cncl of Education 1879-81. Comr Philadelphia International Exhibition 1876. With (Sir) Patrick Jennings (q.v.) represented NSW at 1887 Col Conference, Lond. Estate valued for probate at £37,921. MLA for Goldfields W. 13 June 1859-10 Nov. 1864; for The Lower Hunter 8 Dec. 1864-3 Feb. 1872; for Goldfields N. 10 Jan.-l March 1870 (resigned to sit for Lower Hunter when el. for both seats); for Morpeth 17 Dec. 1874-26 Jan. 1887. Appointed MLC 2 Feb. 1887 but did not take seat. Chmn of Cttees 15 Jan. 1861-22 April 1864; Attorney-General 13 Aug. 1879-4 Jan. 1883

Details: Sir Robert Wisdom b. 1830, barrister and politician, was born on 31 January 1830 at Blackburn, Lancashire, England, son of John Wisdom, collector of customs, and his wife Alice, nee McGuinness. In August 1834 in the Arab he arrived in Sydney with his parents who soon moved to Morpeth. Educated at Maitland and at the Sydney College, he returned to Morpeth and embarked on a literary career.

Details: An inquest was held at the Bricklayers Arms, Lake Macquarie road before coroner Dr. Knaggs, on the body of a miner John Barker, who had been long ill, but whose death was precipitated from inhaling chloroform. Witness Robert Wittin deposed that he was a miner living at the Junction, in the same house as the deceased, John Barker who, for the last thirty years had been in the employ of the A. A. Company, occupied in sinking pits; he was a skilled miner, a very ingenious man and very trustworthy; deceased had been asthmatical for the last twenty years which was occasioned through his working in a damp pit; latterly he believed Barker had received a pension from the Company. Dr. Irwin had attended Barker and provided chloroform. Witness Thomas Moses was a miner who gave evidence re the chloroform..Verdict - Accidentally suffocated through using chloroform
