Details: A handsome monument was erected years ago in memory of the Tighe family. From the records on the memorial it is learned that Robert Tighe died March 5, 1844 aged 46 and also Ann MacNamara, his mother in law 1850 and Sarah, wife of the above who died January 1853. Aged 48....Mr. Robert Tighe was a contemporary of Mr. Simon Kemp, and a well known figure in the early history of Newcastle. His son Mr. A.A. P. Tighe represented Northumberland in the State Parliament for some years and a daughter is Mrs. C.H. Hannell

Details: Newcastles first town clerk was Robert Henry Tighe. He came of a well known Irish family. His father was Robert Tighe, sergeant in 28th regiment who was attached to the hospital ship which was cruising in the Mediterranean Sea during the War of Independence. Mr. Tighe arrived in NSW in 1838. He was a brother of the late Mr. Alfred Atkinson Tighe, Mayor of Newcastle for the years 1872 and 1873, and who also represented Northumberland in the Legislative Assembly
