Details: ROBERT SCOBIE, of Mount Pleasant, was born in Stirlingshire, Scotland, in 1831, and in 1839 arrived in Australia. Settling in Maitland, his father purchased the lease and goodwill of a sixty-acre farm, which he for ten years worked in the face of disasters by floods, depression of trade, etc. In 1851 the subject of this sketch became it partner in the concern, and two years later the firm purchased the present farm. At the time of the arrival of Mr. Scobie in Maitland the district farmers had commenced the growing of fruit trees. Keeping pace with the venture, Messrs. Scobie increased the extent of their orchard from time to time, with the result that at the present moment their orchard and gardens cover an area of sixty acres. Here are grown oranges (several kinds), apples, pears, peaches, plums, loquats, strawberries and other choice varieties of the treasures of Pomona. An area of nine and it half acres is devoted to vine culture, which, under the skill of such experienced vignerons, bring forth table grapes in great profusion; but in addition to this, Messrs. Scobie, being thoroughly skilled in the matters of grafting, manuring, etc., obtain large results as the fruits of their labours. For exhibits of fruits and vegetables at the various local agricultural shows they have taken some hundreds of prizes. Robert Scobie is a J.P., a member of the licensing board, vice-president of the Hunter River Agricultural Association, and a member of the road trust. As one of the first members of the school-of-arts, Mr. Scobie took an active part in the establishment of that institution. He possesses sixty-six acres freehold, and twenty three acres leasehold, on which is erected it handsome brick residence. Mr. Scobie is married, and has fifteen children living
