Details: Several orchards had been formed in the district about the time of Michael Scobie s arrival. He, too, commenced the cultivation of fruit, and vegetables. Many difficulties were encountered in his venture. Timber had to be cleared; roads were in very poor condition; floods damaged several crops; markets were poor, for commercially this was a period of depression. Notwithstanding these adversities, he persevered until the whole of his 60 acres developed into a flourishing orchard and market garden. Nine and a half acres were devoted to the culture of table grapes. In the orchard were apples, pears, plums, peaches, strawberries, loquats and several kinds of oranges. It is interesting to record that oranges were introduced into Australia by a clergyman, the Rev. Johnson, who came out with the First Fleet in 1788, and resided for eleven years at Parramatta, where he planted in his garden some seeds brought from Lisbon. The trees grew rapidly and well, and by taking cuttings from his or orangery, the culture spread to different parts. They grew particularly well on the Hunter and Paterson. Gold was discovered by Edward Hargreaves, at Lewis Pond Creek, about the time Michael s son, Robert, was 20 years old (Robert- was born September 7, 1831). Like a great many others, the latter was captivated by tales of these discoveries. Taking a horse and cart, he set off accompanied by another, young man, Mr. Brodie, to try bis luck at prospecting. Roads were not so well defined, or well made as we know them. The two young men would go in different directions, one taking the horse and cart, one walking, arranging before hand to meet at a certain point they could see in the distance, at a given time, until at last they reached Louisa Creek, near Mudgee. Their search was rewarded by finding a little gold. However, Robert decided to return to Maitland. That same year (1851) he entered into partnership with his father. Under their joint guidance, their constant care and attention, the quality of the products of The Gardens, Mount Pleasant reached the highest grade. A Maitland Mercury of the year 1844 mentions that soon after the introduction of cucumber growing into the colony, Mr. Michael Scobie grew a Turkey cucumber 19 inches long and 12 inches round. At the various agricultural shows in the locality some hundreds of prizes were won by their products as the years advanced Scobie s grapes were much sought-after in the Sydney shops. Mr. Robert Scobie introduced a new system of ground irrigation. He placed porous pipes some distance below the surface, and ran water through them. The Gardens increased in extent, from time to time. In addition to the original 60 acres (which were now freehold), another 30 were acquired. The property became recognised as a model orchard and for years this was the show place of the district. Michael had additional spheres of interest, too. He was an elder of the Presbyterian Church. Although not actively engaged in any public movements, he took a deep concern in them all. Hale and hearty, highly esteemed by all, retaining to the last his interest in the work of the farm, Michael lived to the ripe old age of 100 years and five months, passing to the Great Beyond on March 24, 1903. He attributed his long healthy life to the fact that he was a non-smoker, and non drinker. He went to bed with the birds, and arose as early as they. His wife (Elizabeth Heugh), had predeceased him. She died on January 30, 1887, at the age of 78. Their family numbered eleven - six sons and five daughters. Three of them had passed on before their father. A second residence had been erected on the property for Robert and his bride (Mary Warren), when they married on June 2, 1859
