In turn was butcher, carrier between Maitland and Glen Innes, dealer in horses and bullocks. Moved to Clarence R dist c. 1870 as timber getter; successful in gold rushes at Solferino and Lionsville 1872 and acquired store; bankrupt 1873 owing to mining speculations and decline of field, discharged 1875. Moved to Tatham nr Coraki on Richmond 1880, principally engaged in cutting and hauling iron-bark girders and piles, with 30 timber workers on his payroll 1882; bought, built and chartered steamers, including Glossariel, May Newton, Triton/ Emma Pyers, which carried timber and traded maize with Brisb. and Syd.; also farmer. Bought Thomas share in business Morgan & Thomas, partnership continuing until 1886; built township at Irvington 1884, with store, cottages, Wesleyan church; bankrupt 1887. Moved to Casino, becoming successful auctioneer, passing business over to sons when in LA; also started boiling down works, Casino, and owned selections in Qld where fattened cattle for Syd. market; valuer for Tomki shire cncl. JP 1885. Opposed federation. Alderman Casino 1884-94. MLA for The Richmond 17 July 1894-16 July 1904.

Details: Robert Quandrill per ship Adrian, assigned to William Millar, charged with disobedience and neglect of duty.. William Millar states - that on the 29 of December 1832, I ordered the prisoner to remove from the hut in which he now lives to another as it was too crowded. He replied no and if I disobey your order you can flog me. On the same day I found twelve head of cattle which the prisoner had in his charge at the time in the tobacco ground. I drove them out. The prisoner made no defence and was found guilty and sentenced to 50 lashes
