Details: ROBERT McEWEN, Hotel keeper, was born in Maitland in 1856, and lived there, at Minmi, and at Anvil Creek till 1863, when he was brought to Waratah. He followed mining for many years, working at the various pits in the district till 1882, when he took his present hotel, which had been previously occupied by his father-in-law, Mr Marchant. This is one of the oldest hotels in the district, and now does a leading trade, owing to Mr. McEwens large mining connection, and his recognition by the general public. He is a genial host, and is honest and upright in all his dealings. He is a member of the G.U.O.O.F. and of the A.O.D. The hotel is centrally situated opposite the post and telegraph offices, and contains twelve rooms. Mr. McEwen is assisted in the hotel by his wife, who is a first-class landlady. He is the father of one son and two daughters

Details: William and Ellen Lamb were indicted for having on 6th June 1857, and at other times, kept and maintained at Morpeth a common, ill-governed and disorderly house, the resort of persons of ill-fame. All women and children were requested to leave the court. Witnesses Constable Little, Robert McGregor, Charles Williams and Isaace White. Drinking at night, dancing and the singing of improper songs had been witnessed. Noise from the house could be heard at a distance of 200 yards; women of known bad character had been seen to go in there at night, and strange men had been seen to leave early in the morning. The prisoners who had a family of young children and a daughter of about 17 years of age were both found guilty and sentenced to 9 and 6 months imprisonment
