Details: ROBERT PORTER HOUSE, Mayor, was born at Wingate, Durham, England, in 1847, and came to the colony and settled in this district in 1863, where he has resided ever since. He got employment in the shop he now owns from Mr. Campbell, for whom he worked first as a boy and then as assistant. He finally forced his way up, till in 1880 he purchased the business lie now carries on. This is one of the oldest concerns in the district and holds a leading position in the trade. Mr. House was elected an alderman of Plattsburg in 1880 and has held the seat continually since. He has been four times elected mayor of the borough and fills the position with dignity and credit to himself and the district. He has always taken an active part in all that affects the welfare of the community and stands in the front ranks of private and public men in the Newcastle district. He was gazetted as a justice of the peace during the second year of his mayoralty, He is one of the founders of the Lord Carrington Lodge, E C., and was its first W.M. He is a member of the A.O.D., and the father of one son and three daughters
