Details: DR. R. E. GRIGSON, M.R.C.S., was born in Norfolk, England, in 1847, and educated at Guy s Hospital, London. He came to the colony in 1873 as surgeon in the emigration service and practiced for two years at Waratah. In 1875 he removed to Muswellbrook, commenced practice, and in 1878 was placed on the commission of the peace for New South Wales. He is the Government medical officer for the district, public vaccinator, surgeon to the local hospital, and has always taken a lively interest in measures affecting the welfare of the district. Dr. Grigson was married in 1885 to Mary, the daughter of the late Mr. Francis White, of Edinglassie, Muswellbrook

Details: Newcastle historian F. A. Cadell - Where the Civic Block now stands was the Black Diamond Hotel, that well known hotel which was opened by Mr. Robert Hackworthy, who gave it that name. On the upper floor of the hotel was an entertainment hall. There lodge meetings and many convivial gatherings took place. Alongside this hotel was Messrs John Ash and Son timber yard. This was later destroyed by fire.
