Surname: Cary (?)
First Name: John
Ship: Isabella
Date: 19 February 1827
Place: Newcastle
Source: NSW Courts Magistrates, Newcastle Police Court: 1823-1825, 1826-1827 (Ancestry)
Details: John Glinn per ship Prince Regent and John Cary per ship Isabella, both in service to the A.A. Company, charged with (Glinn) for stealing a pair of trowsers belonging to a fellow prisoners and (Cary) for conniving at the robbery. Constable William May, on the establishment of the A.A. Company at Port Stephens, states - A pair of trowsers were lost by Samuel Pritchard one of the Companys servants. The two prisoners before the court were at work behind the hut in which the trowsers had been deposited and whilst Pritchard and some of the men were unloading a boat the trowsers were taken away. A search was made for the trowsers but ineffectually. I then secreted myself in the scrub adjoining and shortly after saw Glinn go to the creek and pull his clothes off and go into the water. On his coming out I saw him with the trowsers, they are those now produced. He laid the trowsers down and Cary took them and brought them into the scrub. He did not see me until I rose when Cary threw the trowsers behind him. Samuel Pritchard states - I lost a pair of trowsers at Port Stephens. The prisoners deny the charge. Sentence - Glinn - 2 years added to his original term of transportation. Cary 6 months in irons in the gaol gang.
