Details: A national calamity was how the President of the Newcastle and Hunter District Historical Society (Mr. W. J. . Goold) described the destruction by bush fires of the historic home Porphyry with its valuable relics of the early days. Members of the Historical Society visited the home as guests of the owners, Mr. and Mrs. Gavin Ralston, two years ago. The home was originally that of Rev. Henry Carmichael, who arrived In the Colony in 1831 as a teacher for Dr. John Dunmore Lang s Australian College In Sydney. Between Carmichael and the headstrong Lang a difference arose shortly after the former s arrival. This Is referred to in an historic manuscript which the late Mr. Justice Ralston handed down to his son. Mr. Gavin Ralston. Apparently Carmichael felt that the expectations held out to him by Lang, when he brought him out, had not been realised. Notwithstanding this he conscientiously carried out his duties at the college until the termination of the engagement in 1834. Then he settled at Seaham, building on Porphyry Point overlooking the Williams River. The original grant of the property was made to a settler named Dickson in 1823. The home was one of the show places of the North so far as the Historical Society was concerned. The home was the cradle of the wine-making Industry In that district In the early days, and there were many relics of this, which were Inspected with Interest by Historical Society members. The scene to-day bears eloquent testimony to the Intensity of the fire, which melted the glass of the windows into heaps on the ground, demolished stone masonry and reduced the heavy timbers of the old home to a smoldering ruin.
