Surname: Andrew Cook Timber Mill, Newcastle
First Name: -
Ship: LH
Date: 11 May 1935
Place: Union-street, Newcastle
Source: Newcastle Morning Herald
Details: TIMBER MILLS Joinery Factory Andrew Cook and Sons Enterprise. The extensions and additions to the plant of Andrew Cook and Sons, Ltd., timber merchants, Union-street, Newcastle are almost completed, making one of the most modern and extensive mills in New South Wales. The firm, which is one of the oldest in the Northern district, was originally in business in the vicinity of the Civic Block. Ten years ago, the land-now an attractive garden opposite the Town Hall-was acquired by the Newcastle City Council in furtherance of its civic activities, and it is expected that the park will eventually be put to other than its present use by having erected upon it the administrative buildings of the ever expanding Electric Light Department. When the firm found it necessary to secure other premises, a move was made to Union-street, where it took over the branch mill of H. McKenzie Ltd. The accommodation was inadequate for the business carried on by the new company and its principal (Mr. Andrew Cook) recently acquired the building adjoining known as the Castle Skating Rink, and the site of the old Union Pictures. The development work has been steadily extended, and the company s property now extends from Union-street to Arnott street, with a good depth, the headquarters of the Fire Brigade being on the northern boundary. The extensions now approaching completion were designed and carried out under the personal supervision of Mr. Andrew Cook, sen., who has been in the timber and contracting business for upwards of 40 years, the whole of that time in Newcastle, of which city he is a native, and a former alderman and Mayor
