Details: A resident of Newcastle unearthed a valuable book relating to early convict days in Newcastle containing original depositions of the cases heard at the Newcastle Police Office in the year 1829...Thomas Hayes, Henry Ballance, D. Coyle, Hugh Daley, Henry Shipley, James Cairns and George Piggott, all government men, were charged with being drunk and disorderly in the prison. Overseer Healy stated that he heard an unusual noise in the barracks and upon going upstairs to ascertain the cause, he found Coyle and Piggott engaged in a fight. All the prisoners were drunk with the exception of Coyle and Daley. The sentences were Coyle 50 lashes; Daley discharged; the others three days solitary confinement
