When seventeen years of age he learned the blacksmithing trade and agricultural implement business, at which he worked for about eight years with Messrs. Capper of Maitland. In 1880 he settled in Armidale and commenced his present foundry and agricultural implement manufactory-the largest in Armidale-employing ten hands and containing all the best mechanism necessary for carrying on the work required. Our subject takes an active part in public matters and has been four years an alderman of the city. During the last year of that term he occupied the mayoral chair, and for the two years previous was chairman of the Works Committee. He is much respected in the city, both in his public and private capacity. In 1879 he was married to the daughter of the late Harry Harris, of West Maitland, by whom he has two sons and two daughters.
