Matthew Newport states - I know the adze, I had borrowed it from Ryan to do my Government work in the barracks. It was taken from thence last week, I dont know by whom. NB this witness was discovered to be much intoxicated whilst giving evidence. Peter Ryan states - I lent my adze some time since to Newport. Yesterday I had it offered to me for sale by Butler. He refused to let me have it upon which I applied to the constable. I am frequently robbed of my tools and obliged to give rewards for their recovery. The prisoner states - I found the adze in the barracks. I did not see an owner for it. I thought I had a right to sell it. The overseer in the barracks states...It was reported to me last week that an adze had been stolen from the cooperage. Every prisoner in barracks knew of the theft.
