Details: OLD BELMONT LANDMARK FALLS TO PROGRESS A TREE which for half a century had looked across the township of Belmont from its vantage point on Andersons Hill yesterday fell to the march of progress. The ,tree, a huge Norfolk Island pine, approximately 10-ft. in height, resisted the blows of the axemen to the last. and avenged itself in the end by destroying several panels of fencing, sweeping through four , electric supply wires, and crashing on top of a garage. The tree was growing on the property of Mr. Frank Lindstrom. It had to be removed because it was interfering with the erection of a dwelling. It was decided to fell it in one operation, the intention being that it should crash on to Bellevue-road. Despite the efforts of a number of workmen, who tried to control the direction of the fall, the tree swayed at the last moment, and crashed on to the property of Mr. A. Thomson. About 55 years ago the late Mr. John Anderson, from whom Andersons Hill derived its name, planted 15 or Ii Nor folk Island pines, Jacaranda, and Bunya Bunya trees on this landmark. In those days the hill comprised one estate. Two other trees which were planted about the same time had an interesting history. Mrs. Mathew Lister, who owned the old Ship Inn at .Newcastle on one occasion, paid a visit to the Wishing Tree in the Sydney Botanical Gardens. She picked up two pine cones, dropped them into her folded parasol, and brought them back to Newcastle. Two seeds from the cones were planted in pots, and for several vears adorned the bar of the Ship Inn. When they began to grow too tall for indoor decoration, Mrs. Lister took them to Belmont, and gave them to Mr. Anderson. He planted them at the back door of the original home. The two trees are still in the grounds of the Yarragee Guest House on Andersons Hill. Each is over 100 feet.
