Details: Fire in Bolton Street spread to the premises of Mr. Clarke, a sailmaker in Watt Street at a distance of over one hundred yards from the first conflagration. Mr. George Alderton, deputy fireman of the Newcastle Fire Brigade rushed to the spot and pushing open the door of the loft lost no time in extinguishing the flames and doubtless prevented the destruction of a whole range of wooden shanties along the eastern side of Watt Street

Details: G. AND H. ALDERTON, Boot and Shoe Establishment, Hunter-street.-Mr. H. Alderton was born in London in 1841, where he remained, received his education, and learned his business . In 1864 he came to Sydney, and went to Newcastle, where he has since stayed. In 1875 he joined his brother George as partner in the present business, and continued so till 1878, when his brother died, and he became the sole proprietor, still retaining the firm s name. He does one of the largest retail businesses in the line in the city, and has a splendid and well-assorted stock always on hand. It is one of the oldest-established retail boot businesses in Newcastle. Mr. Alderton is a member of Lodge Harmony, S.C., belongs to the A.O.F., in which he has passed through the chair, and the G.U.O.O F., with which he has been connected for twenty-three years. He is married, is the father of three children, and is an adherent of the Church of England. In 1887 Mr. Alderton erected four fine shops at the tram terminus corner, in one of which he carries on his boot business. He is also proprietor of a great deal of other city and suburban property
