Details: John Ryan Brenan - Solicitor. Born c. 1798 Ireland, son of John, gentleman, and Maria, nee Ryan; Married (1) Cecilia Mahon; 2s. survived him; (2) 1826 Anna Maria Price. Died 5 June 1868 Petersham, NSW. Bred to law; practised as attorney, also big landowner. Arr. Syd. June 1834, promising to invest £2000. Set up private practice and became solicitor to Bank of Australasia. Coroner, Syd., 1835. Superintendent of convicts. 1836-7, until appointment over-ruled by Colonial Office. Appointed third police magistrate, Syd., by Gipps; lost the position when city cncl refused to pay him, 1844. Practised as solicitor while holding govt appointments. Later practised at W. Maitland until death. From c. 1836 to 1839 owned farm and cattle stn nr Parramatta; in 1856 owned large estates in S. Cumberland or W. Camden electorate. MLA for Cumberland (S. Riding) 21 Aug.-28 Oct. 1856
