Details: HENRY YORK, Mayor, was born at Emu Plains in 1839, and there received his education. When eighteen years of age he removed to Canonbar to take charge of one of his father s stations, and five years later visited Sydney and went into the butchering business, at which he remained a twelvemonth. Moving to Maitland, he became a horse and cattle dealer, and from there came on to Jerry s Plains, Singleton, where he conducted a hotel for fifteen years, and bought, in conjunction with his brother, stock for the Sydney market. In 1883 he leased the Caledonia Hotel, conducted its business for two and a half years, and sold out in 1885 to start business as an auctioneer and stock and station agent. In 1884 Mr. York was elected an alderman of Singleton, and in 1887 filled the civic chair. He is married, and has six sons and three daughter.
