Details: WILLIAM WRIGHT, Inspector of Police, was born in 1833 in Norfolk, England, and received his education in his native county. In 1855 he sailed for Sydney, and, after arrival in the following year, made a three years tour through various parts of the country. At the end of this time (1861) he entered the Government service as a mounted policeman, and was stationed at Bathurst, afterwards forming a new station called Cain (now Ilford) Swamp. He had been on the latter for about eighteen months, when he received information of the sticking-up of the mail at Cherry Tree Hill by Charles O Connor and Joseph Hewett. Constable Wright succeeded in capturing the first-named the next morning, and the latter within a month, it being the only case where a dual arrest has been known to be made by one man. Whilst in Ilford, Mr. Wright succeeded in breaking up the McGrab brothers gang, who at that time were noted as horse, cattle, and sheep stealers. In 1867 he was ordered to Braidwood, where he remained until he had captured the notorious Clarkes. He returned to Ilford, and a few months later was appointed, in 1867, to Grafton, as sub-inspector. Leaving Grafton, he proceeded to Murrurundi, and three years later was placed in Narrabri, where he remained for a similar period. He was then sent to the Walgett district, and thence to Gunnedah, where he fulfilled his duties for two and a-half years. He completed six and a half years at Inverell, at the end of which time he was placed as inspector in Walgett, of which place he had not been resident nine months. Inspector Wright resided in Fox-street, Walgett, and has been in the constabulary for the last twenty-eight years.
