Details: EDWARD JAMES BOURKE, Hairdresser and Tobacconist, was born in Newtown, Sydney, in 1851, but removed with his parents to Singleton in 1859, and there learned his trade. His father having died when he was only twelve years of age, he was for many years the main support of his widowed mother and the family. About the age of thirteen years he started a hairdresser s shop, and has since continued the business, conducting it with profit and advantage to himself and with satisfaction to his patrons. It is now the principal business of its kind in town, and Mr. Bourke fully deserves the position he has attained. In 1887 Mr. Bourke was elected to a vacancy in the Council. He is a member of the Protestant Alliance, the Orange Lodge, the R.A.O.B., and he has been through all the chairs of the M.U.O.O.F. He is an active member of the local Fire Brigade, and has been connected with the volunteers for the last fourteen years. He has on many occasions at the risk of his life been the means of saving from drowning a number of people. On one occasion he saved two persons, and at various other times he distinguished himself in like manner. Tit 1885 the citizens of Singleton bold a public meeting and thanked him for these acts of bravery, and by resolution petitioned the Royal Humane Society for their medal. He was presented then with a gold watch and chain as a slight recognition of his services in the cause of humanity. He is a general patron of and participant in all athletic sports, and is one of the leading cricketers. Mr. Bourke is married, and is the father of one son and two daughters
