Details: JOSEPH WILLIAM BIRKENHEAD was born in 1845 in London, and in 1857 accompanied his parents to Australia. Settling in Maitland he received his education at the High School of that town under the late Rev. M. McIntyre. Ile first entered on mercantile life in the offices of the late John Butler, and subsequently with the late John Levein. In 1871 he entered the service of Messrs. Wolfe and Gorrick, becoming in 1881 a partner in that business. He was elected an alderman of Maitland in 1886, being returned second on the poll out of thirteen candidates. He was for many years an active member of the council, and is at present a magistrate of the colony, and a committeeman of the Northern Jockey Club. Mr. Birkenhead has travelled extensively through Europe and America and has always taken a great and practical interest in musical entertainments given for the purpose of charity. In 1871 he married Emily Mary, daughter of Jacob Gorrick, by whom he has six children living
