Details: Mr. J. A. Pulbrook s boot warehouse, the subject of illustration No. 7, is situated at the intersection of Hunter-street west and Union-street, and is one of the most commodious and attractive business establishments of its class in the northern districts. It is constructed of brick and has a large frontage to both streets. There are really two shops, both being fitted with exceedingly fine plate-glass windows, in which a portion of the stock is splendidly arranged. Mr. Pulbrook is a direct importer of many years standing, and is widely known as a smart, energetic, and courteous business man. He went to Maitland upwards of 12 years ago, and carried on his business there in one of the best houses in the town for over nine years. Besides securing a good local trade, he was successful in extending his business operations right through to Tenterfield, and these increased so rapidly that he found it desirable some two and a half years ago to remove to Newcastle to cope with them. Since that time he has made the country orders a specialty, and this portion of the business occupied almost the whole of his personal attention. The Newcastle and district trade is also a very fine one, the premises being splendidly situated for such a connection. Besides the importing Mr. Pulbrook carries on the manufacturing business very extensively, and his wonderful success in all departments of the trade is a sure indication of the quality of goods he keeps in stock

Details: William Butler per John and John Biggs per Adrian, firemen employed at the Telegraph, charged with neglect of duty in allowing the light to go out. James Pumphrey testified....On Wednesday night last about one oclock I got up to see where my watchman was when I saw very little light at the light house. The fire was nearly out. I am Principal Overseer of the Iron Gang and live in the new house near the flat staff...William Cromarty testified... On the Wednesday afternoon I had occasion to go to Mr. Smith s station to fetch the carcass of a bullock which I had kept there. I left one of my men my own place and took Butler with e expecting to be back before ten oclock. The water being low we were detained until twelve oclock before we could leave the dairy. On leaving the dairy I could see the light, it was good and I steered by it until I got to Pearch Point. I then observed that the light began to get dim but still it may be have been seen at the distance of five or six miles. About quarter past one I landed at the wharf. I sent one of my own boats over to the light house to attend the fire until daylight about five minutes two I saw the fire burning quite clear and it continued until daylight. I ordered Butler to the boats crew hut as he was wet and cold. Discharged....Magistrates George Brooks and A.W. Scott...Mr. Cromarty has been informed that we consider it an irregularity to employ the men attached to the light house on his private business so as to interfere with public duty and that should the circumstance again occur it will be reported
