Details: JAMES PRITCHARD was born in London in 1829 and learned the trade of a builder in that city. Coming to Sydney in 1855 he for two years followed his business, and in 1857 settled in Maitland on the site of the premises he now occupies, and on which he has erected large steam joinery works, including planing, moulding, morticing and circular saws. Since establishing himself in Maitland, Mr. Pritchard has erected a number of the principal public and private buildings in the district, including the public schools at East and West Maitland, Bishop Murrays residence, and the Commercial Bank in High-street, West Maitland. He employs on an average forty hands. Mr. Pritchard has been an alderman for nine years, and in 1883 was elected mayor. He is a prominent member of the M.U.I.O.O.F., and the Sons of Temperance, having filled every office in the lodges.
