Details: Extract from Recollections of George Priest.....Mr. George C. Priest, of Cole-street, Islington, is the oldest native of Newcastle. From a rich storehouse or memory he can recall many interesting events of Newcastle s early history. Mr. Priest s boyhood friends - Mr. Job Fleming, who lives in the same street, and Mr. Jim Croft, of Tighes Hill have seen long stretches of time in the Newcastle district, but not quite as long as Mr. Priest, who was born in a cottage in Bolton- street, between the Criterion Hotel and Messrs. Braye and Cohen s office, on May 15. 1840. He is therefore 83 years old to-day. His mother was, with the exception of the military officers wives, the first free woman to settle in Newcastle. That was nearly 100 years ago. She was born in Lower George-street, Sydney. The block of land upon which the house was built by Mr. Priest, senior, in Bolton-street, nearly a century ago, was purchased for 25s. Mr. Priest believes that the block upon which the Criterion Hotel is built could have been bought for £2 at the time. Mr Priest received his early education at the school of Mrs Felton in Newcomen-street, and also at the scholastic establishment of Mr. Thomas McPhail in a house at the top of Thorn-street. Mr Priest served his apprenticeship to the baking business. He did not, however, follow his trade for a great length of time. He was engaged in the bonded stores of Messrs. Wood Brothers, in Bolton-street, for many years resigning to fill a position at the Port Stephens lighthouse, where he was employed for 28 years. For 18 years of that period he was principal lighthouse keeper, having succeeded his brother, who was in charge for many years.
