Details: THOMAS DOLAN BERLINSHAW, Hat Manufacturer, Hunter-street, was born in Lancashire in 1857, and learned his trade at Stockport, Cheshire, under Christey, of London. He came to New Zealand in 1872, and settled in Dunedin, keeping a manufactory there in 1883 and 1884. He removed to New South Wales in 1886, and settled in Newcastle as a manufacturing hatter. He already employs seven hands, and expects a very rapid increase to his trade. He manufactures for most of the leading storekeepers in the northern district, and has a retail shop near the Markets for the sale of his locally-made hats and for men s mercery. He is a member of the M.IJ.O.O.F., and is married, with a family of three children

Details: Bernard Lyons and James Lemon convicted before Mr. Justice Kinchela of manslaughter. His Honor observed that he had tried four cases of manslaughter this sessions, all of which arose from the abominable drinking houses and grog shops. In a drunken fray between Lemon and another man they went out to fight, when Lyons followed them and struck the unfortunate deceased a blow with a stick which killed himm. Lyons three years and Lemon one year to an ironed gang.
