Details: Mr. John Pender, an old resident of West Maitland, returned to the colony by the ship Tamana, which arrived in Sydney on Saturday last, from Glasgow. Mr. Pender left about four years ago, the greater portion of which period he spent in Scotland. Shortly before leaving Glasgow, he met with Mr. Robert McDonald, late manager of the Commercial Bank, West Maitland, whose state of health necessitated a visit to the mother country up wards of a year ago. Mr. Pender represents Mr, McDonald as being improved in health, and Looking well. He expressed his intention of returning to the colony as soon as it was considered proper for him to do so.

Details: JOHN WILTSHIRE PENDER, Architect, Elgin-street, was born in 1833 in Tobermory, Argyleshire, and completed his education at the Royal Academy, Inverness, in which city he learned his profession. He came to Melbourne in 1855, and after spending two years on the various goldfields of that colony, came to Maitland in 1857, and for some years managed the business of the late J . Pender and Son, builders. For ten years he was employed in the management of the business of P. Logan, importer and soap and candle manufacturer, and at the end of that time commenced the practice of his profession. Since doing this, Mr. Pender has designed a great number of the principal public and private buildings in the district, amongst others being the Benevolent Asylum, A. J. S. Bank, Masonic Hall, Messrs . E. P. Capper and Sons new warehouse in West Maitland, numerous churches, including one at Scone, at Armidale, at Merriwa, and at East Maitland, and a great many handsome business places and private residences in various parts of the northern districts. He has always taken an active part in all movements having for their object the welfare and advancement of the town and district
