Details: Inquest into the death of Sydney Samuel Chambers – Witnesses - Amy Chambers said, I am daughter of Joseph Chambers, residing in Watt-street, Newcastle; the deceased is my brother; he was 29 years of age; I was behind the bar of the Caledonian Hotel the last time I saw him. Also the following witnesses John Richard Taylor, actor engaged at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle; John Ice, engaged at the Theatre Royal Newcastle, attempted to rescue deceased; George Clifton; Joseph Francis Peers, medical practitioner and assistant to Dr. Bowker. The jury found a verdict of Accidental death by drowning and added the following rider - The jury wish to express their high sense of the bravery displayed by the lad Ice, who is not fifteen years of age, in endeavouring at the risk of his own life, to save that of deceased; and request the coroner to bring it under the notice of the Royal Humane Society

Details: Pelerin, that beautiful old homestead in South Singleton, so closely connected with the early history of the town will soon be sold. Pelerin is part of the original grant of land to the Howe family (Howe led the party which discovered Single ton). It was sold to Charles Hilton Dight, of Clifton, near Breeza, who erected a home on it. Mr. Dight died in 1918, after representing this electorate in the State Parliament for a number of years. His widow, Jane Allen Dight, resided at Pelerin up to the time of her death, when she left it to her next of kin, Alsager Benjamin Collett and Adela May Collett.
