Details: Mr. George Russell contractor for the erection of a new building on the site occupied by Messrs. Owen and Beckett as a grocery and drapery establishment, is now engaged demolishing the old structure which is one of the landmarks of Maitland. The old building was a two storied structure of brick with cedar fittings. In fact there was more cedar than hardwood used in the general work. The original building was erected about 70 years ago at a time when cedar trees were as plentiful as gum trees are today. For many years it was a scene of great activity but when the railway passed through Maitland and inland towns developed, trade fell away, and the old place ceased to do its roaring trade. The new premises which will be of handsome design are to be erected for Messrs J. Chant and co
