Details: The first record of Methodism in the Newcastle District is back in the days of the convict settlement, when the Rev. Samuel Leigh, the pioneer Wesleyan missionary, visited the district. Mr. Leigh arrived in Sydney in 1815 and some three years later he came to Newcastle, evidently on a mission to the convicts. The Rev. Joseph Orton was the next Wesleyan preacher to visit Newcastle, but most of his work was confined to the Maitland District which at that time (1835) was considerably larger and more important than Newcastle.
